Abstract
Disposal of medical waste has emerged as a major problem in the United States. The problem was brought to public attention by recent episodes of medical waste washing ashore in some coastal states and the perceived threat of contracting the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome from it. This has led to restrictive rules governing the disposal of medical waste in most states and to more waste being defined as infectious. Coincidentally with the broadening of the definition of infectious waste, the options for the treatment and disposal of medical waste are diminishing because of lack of space and environmental concerns.
