Strings from five-branes

Abstract
A heterotic string emerges as a soliton of the heterotic five-brane. We compare its properties with the fundamental heterotic string and suggest that the two might be identified. The solution relies on the observation that the classical five-brane Lagrangian incorporates string one-loop effects.Keywords
