Abstract
Prognostic information on 60 patients (aged 16-40 yr) with ischemic stroke was reviewed. Immediate mortality from stroke was low and long-term mortality was due to other causes than cerebrovascular disease. The recovery from neurological deficits was good except for patients with occlusions of the internal carotid artery or the proximal part of the middle cerebral artery. Reinfarction was rare (about 0.5% annually) and other late neurological complications did not seriously affect long-term prognosis. More than 80% of the patients were able to resume work on a full or part-time basis. Keywords
