By comminution of the roots of Cochlearia armoracia, a gas was found which had been analyzed previously, and which was recognized, by melting point, molecular weight, gas chromatogram and IR-spectrum, as carbon oxysulfide. From 5 kg of horseradish 60 mg of carbon oxysulfide was isolated. The gas acts as an antibiotic on Gram-positive bacteria.
