Abstract
A dog sensitized by hematoporphyrin injection demonstrated cutaneous irritation, paroxysms, and edema. Phototoxicity ignorance by the general biomedical community constitutes a health hazard. Certain food colorants and dyes proposed for angiography use produce lethal effects in cells and whole organisms on light exposure but not in the dark. Yet light-relatedness is usually neglected in toxicity studies. Specific light involvement should be considered whenever light-absorbing substance toxicity is assessed.
