Status of articular cartilage tissue engineering

Abstract
In recent years, many in vitro and animal studies have investigated various methods to engineer articular cartilage. Although none has yet resulted in the full regeneration of articular cartilage, several investigations have revealed the influence of various exogenous matrices, cells, and regulators on cartilage repair. This review highlights recent findings on the effects of 1) matrix properties, including composition and porosity; 2) cells, including cell origin and new methods of cell culture; and 3) regulators on articular cartilage regeneration.
