Abstract
By definition, -forbidden stripping reactions have zero cross sections if the filling order of the simple spherical shell model is followed and if only the usual direct stripping mechanism is considered. Several -forbidden stripping reactions have been observed, and all have similar characteristics. One conceivable explanation of these similarities is a common knockout reaction mechanism whereby the deuteron is captured by the target while knocking a proton out of the target. The calculated differential cross sections for knockout are indeed similar to each other, but differ grossly in shape and magnitude from the observed differential cross sections. It is concluded that the knockout reaction mechanism, by itself, does not explain the observed -forbidden stripping cross sections except possibly in the reaction .
