Abstract
The distinction between normal and abnormal aging of the brain changes as data emerge which identify as pathology what had previously been considered the norm. Forty years of research have yielded some facts: That intellectual decline is not inevitable after age 60; that neuropsychological test performance is related to survival and to development of dementia; and that dementia is associated with chromosome loss, and may result from an inherent defect in microtubules. The mysterious human brain, by its own inquisitive nature, leads the search to discover its secrets.
