Abstract
Twenty-one visual UKST plates, measured by the APM, were used to identify 30 long-period variables in Fornax. Periods are determined for 26 of them. No large-amplitude Mira variable has been detected; we observe a group of low-amplitude variables. These Population II variables have essentially the same absolute visual magnitude as the LPVs in galactic globular clusters and the LPVs near NGC 371 in the SMC. Their period and amplitude distributions are, however, different. Our visual photometry is not extensive enough to reveal more of the physical properties of these variables, but from their colour we can state that nearly a quarter of the variables appear to be carbon stars. Keywords
