The Amino Acids and Sugars in Honeydew of the Tuliptree Scale, Toumeyella liriodendri, and in the Sap of Its Host, Yellow-Poplar

Abstract
Eight amino acids and amides (lysine, glutamic acid, glutamine, aspartic acid, asparagine, alanine, valine, and serine) and 4 sugars (fructose, glucose, ramnose, and galacturonic acid) were identified by paper chromatography, both in the honeydew of the tuliptree scale, Toumeyella liriodendri (Gmelin), and in the sap of its host, Liriodentron tulipifera L. (yellow-poplar). Sucrose was the most abundant sugar in the sap, but was completely digested by the scale and did not appear in the honeydew; this situation has not been described previously for coccids. However, maltose or a maltoselike product was found in the honeydew, as were the amino acids tyrosine and isoleucine, and these 3 are considered waste products.
