Abstract
Evidence is reviewed for considering an ego-impairment/psychopathologic basis for understanding alcoholism. Despite conflicting reports, there is also evidence that psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic treatment may be effective. The author describes his management and treatment of alcohol problems based on an appreciation of the alcoholic’s ego impairments and other psychopathology
