Abstract
In a previous paper (F. Gonzalez-Jimenez, P. Imbert and F. Hartmann-Boutron, Phys. Rev. B 9 (1974), 95), we have related the Mössbauer spectrum in the presence of relaxation to a certain relaxation supermatrix R. In this paper we derive a rigourous expression of R which is valid at arbitrary temperatures and we relate it to the relaxation supermatrix S which characterizes the relaxation of the density matrix σ of the radioactive atom. We then discuss the general problem of lattice averaging in the computation of relaxation effects and as an illustration, we derive the expression for the Mössbauer lineshape of an emitterKeywords
