The Visibility of Terminal Pitch Contour

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to test the visibility of one suprasegmental morphemic structure—terminal pitch contour. Twenty-one college students viewed three speakers who had been recorded on video tape as they spoke interrogative statements structured to allow the terminal pitch contour to either rise or fall and still remain grammatically correct. The students responded by identifying the direction of the pitch movement. For each speaker, direction of terminal pitch contour was significantly identified beyond chance. These results lead to the conclusion that pitch variation, as it is morphemic, is visible and that more information is needed about the visibility of pitch variation and other suprasegmental morphemes.
