Adult Coeliac Disease

Abstract
Histologic changes in the mucosa of the duodenum and jejunum are consistently seen in patients with adult coeliac disease. Their presence lends strong support to the diagnosis of this disease. Conflicting evidence has been reported as to the degree of regression of the histologic lesion following successful treatment by removal of wheat, rye, oat, and barley gluten from the diet (1-5). The present report describes a series of patients carefully followed over several years with both serial small intestinal biopsies and serial absorption tests. Thirteen patients with proved adult coeliac disease were followed from 1 to 5
