Pathologic findings in patients with “centrencephalic” electroencephalographic patterns

Abstract
The association of centrencephalic eeg patterns with neuropathology was studied in 2 patients. A large metastasis in one cerebellar hemisphere was present in one patient with no clinical signs of seizures, and a large astrocytoma within the right temporal lobe with extensions toward the thalamus was present in the other patient who also experienced petit mal seizures. A review of the literature concerning similar cases of brain tumors associated with bilateral 3-per-second wave-and-spike complexes is presented. In view of the predominance of subtentorial or midline localizations in tumors accompanied by this characteristic eeg pattern, the brain stem is considered to have a primary role in the genesis of this pattern.
