Cutaneous Adsorption of Bath Oils

Abstract
The results suggest that certain physical properties may have importance when using bath oils for the treatment of dry skin. Maximum adsorption of bath oil takes place within 20 minutes. The amount of oil adsorbed appears to be directly proportional to the concentration of oil and temperature of the bath water. Patients with dermatoses associated with dry skin notably adsorbed much more oil than did normal subjects (approximately 70%). There is very little adsorption of oil from the "oatmeal oil type." A possible explanation for this is that the finely pulverized oatmeal has a greater affinity for oils than does the skin. The "mineral oil type" is adsorbed about 60% more than the "vegetable oil type," and about 600% better than the "oatmeal oil type."Keywords
