Abstract
Anisotropic powders of Sm2Fe17Nx were prepared by the mechanical milling of Sm2Fe17 and nitriding. The effects of milling time, ball size, and heat treatment on the structure and magnetic properties have been studied. Short milling times resulted in particle attrition; disproportionation into a mixture of Fe and an amorphous Fe‐Sm phase occurred above a critical milling time. Maximum energy products of up to 21 MGOe were obtained in aligned samples of mixed structure which were milled for intermediate times and heat treated prior to nitriding. Keywords
