On the friction of skis

Abstract
The safety of the leg in skiing depends on the coefficient of friction between the boot and the ski. The speed in downhill skiing depends on minimizing the friction between the ski and the snow. The speed of cross-country skiing depends on a subtle relationship between the static and kinetic coefficients of friction. Each of these frictional effects are measured and discussed for different materials and temperatures to show optimum circumstances.
