Abstract
A communication task was developed to investigate the processes by which a speaker selects verbal clues in order to distinguish one word (referent) from another (nonreferent) and the processes by which a listener identifies the speaker's referent word. Data from speakers and listeners in this task were linked to word-association norms by means of a stochastic model. Keywords
