Esophageal Rupture after Mushroom-Alcohol Ingestion

Abstract
To the Editor: An apt commentary on the deadly aftermath encountered in pursuing the edible mushroom may be found on the 1838 tombstone1 erected over a New England family of three who died "... from eating fungi." Although this may record the first known fatality secondary to mushroom poisoning in America the tragedy must have been unrecognized or misdiagnosed at least as frequently in colonial times as in our era. Tyler2 estimates that less than 10 per cent of poisonings find their way into medical literature, and emphasizes their protean symptomatology.Recently a 53-year-old man gave a history of "inky-cap" . . .
