B.C. Hydro Series Capacitor Bank Staged Fault Test

Abstract
A staged phase-to-phase fault was applied to one end of a 500 kV series compensated circuit as part of the specified acceptance tests for the series capacitor bank. This paper summarizes the pre-test planning studies, test execution, and the results of both the staged fault test and its computer simulations for the third series capacitor bank installed at the B.C. Hydro Kennedy Substation. Stability and electromagnetic transients simulations are invaluable for the planning of major system tests and pre-test transients simulations are able to accurately predict test results.
