Abstract
The recent nurses’ pay dispute has served once again to highlight four unchanging facts of life. First, there are a lot of nurses. Second, the NHS nursing paybill is large (£7,770 million). Third, nurses continue to enjoy overwhelming public support. Fourth, because of the other three facts, politicians and government cannot risk not being involved in decisions on nurses’ pay, particularly in the run up to a general election.
