Pseudo-membranous colitis

Abstract
Twelve cases in which the colon only was attacked are described. It is not generally recognized that pseudo-membranous enterocolitis may attack the colon only, and must be considered in differential diagnosis of ulcerative colitis. One group is associated with primary disease of the colon, particularly obstrcution; the other with systemic disease such as pneumonia, uremia or septicemia. The condition may be due to a toxic agent acting locally within the mucosa, and is a separate entity from ischemic colitis or staphylococcal enterocolitis.
