Evaluation of toxicity of a leather processing factory effluent to Midge Larvae(Chironomus Tentans)by Bioassay

Abstract
The toxicity of the effluent from a leather processing factory (Tata Exports Ltd., Dewas, M.P., India) was evaluated by conducting a static bioassay experiment on Chironomus tentans. Chief contaminants were chromium, and sulfate with a high load of B.O.D. Results have shown that the effluent was toxic to C. tentans. EC50 48 hr. was 1:25 dilution. It is suggested that the effluent should be treated and diluted before releasing into water bodies to prevent pollution.
