A Community-Based Study of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Abstract
THE ESTIMATED annual direct and indirect cost to the community for each person with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)1 has been projected to be $9436.2 In addition, the quality of life for individuals with CFS has been found to be significantly lower than for other chronic illness groups.3-6 Because the functional disability associated with CFS results in a marked interruption of work and family life, the syndrome has important implications related to public health and policy.7
