Abstract
A review of the application of acoustic emission analysis to the evaluation of material properties and defect structure is presented, including a brief discussion of experimental techniques. Sources of acoustic emission in composite materials under strain are discussed. Particular attention is directed toward fiber reinforced composites, and experimental results on filament wound NOL rings and vessels (glass/epoxy) are reported. It is concluded that acoustic emission data are helpful in establishing the mechanisms governing operative fracture modes and assessing structural integrity. Keywords
