Abstract
PSYCHOSIS that occurs during quinacrine hydrochloride administration has long been recognized as an infrequent but important toxic manifestation of this drug. It has only recently been noted that a toxic psychosis can be produced by chloroquine phosphate. Two patients have been seen at North Carolina Memorial Hospital who developed a toxic psychosis following administration of these antimalarial agents. Report of Cases Case 1.— A 28-year-old white male was seen on Aug 27, 1960, shortly after returning from a visit to the Soviet Union. He had developed diarrhea five weeks previously and was having 10 to 12 stools daily. Marked tenesmus was present but no blood was observed. Physical examination showed no abnormalities. However, sigmoidoscopy revealed that the rectal and sigmoid mucosa was hyperemic and edematous but without ulceration or friability. Stool cultures revealed no enteric pathogens, but microscopic examination showed an extremely heavy infestation of Giardia lamblia and Trichomonas hominis
