Abstract
The objective of this study has been to attempt to resolve speciation difficulties in two species of trout on the basis of chromosome numbers and morphology. Chromosome numbers and morphology were determined, using squash preparations of blastula chromosomes. This is the first report of the chromosome number in cutthroat (2n = 64) and chromosome morphology in both species. A hypothesis is advanced concerning speciation at the chromosome level, supporting the conclusion that rainbow trout are derived from cutthroat trout. Keywords
