Abstract
Critical care research networks have grown in number and size over the past decade. The goals of these networks differ, allowing them to be broadly divided into trial groups, the objective of which is to conduct randomized, controlled trials, and outcome-based research groups, which focus on quality improvement through data collection and benchmarking. A great deal of planning is required to develop and maintain a successful research network. The challenges to future research networks are balancing growth with effective, valid research. The ability of the benchmarking process used by outcomes-based research networks to improve patient outcomes has yet to be conclusively proven. Keywords
