Abstract
Magnetization measurements are reported for nickel ferrites sintered under various temperatures and oxygen pressures. It is found that the deficiency of an oxygen atom in the spinel lattice gives rise to an increase in magnetic moment of approximately 0.4 μB. By comparing the results for nickel excess ferrites with those which have a stoichiometric Ni : Fe ratio it is concluded that the phenomenon cannot be explained in terms of a redistribution of electrons from the oxygen vacancies among the cations. Oxygen vacancies appear to make an intrinsic contribution to the spontaneous magnetization. Shafer's (1962) suggestion regarding the pressure dependence of solubility of excess nickel in the ferrite lattice is confirmed by the present work. Keywords
