Abstract
A simple extension of the NRL model for PEOS operation is proposed in which an additional mechanism for the opening process is included. This mechanism is responsible for lowering the threshold at which a PEOS using high plasma density (n /spl tilde/10/spl 13/cm/sup -3/) will switch. Using the extended theory, switching currents are predicted which are consistent with those from PEOS experiments on EYESS, POP, and PAWN. Furthermore, the extended theory gives a switch current scaling relation in terms of density in which switch current is found to scale as n/sup 1/4/ at high densities - not linearly as previously held. Keywords
