Abstract
Thre women previously diagnosed as bipolar I manic-depressive, were withdrawn from lithium carbonate prophylaxis immediately prior to pregnancies. The patients were euthymic while on lithium carbonate for at least 3 1/2 yr prior to pregnancies. Of the 3 patients, 2 developed a manic syndrome within 2 wk postpartum. The use of lithium carbonate during pregnancy, particularly in the postpartum period, requires reassessment. An ongoing clinical relationship and the reinstitution of lithium in the 3rd trimester in most cases is advocated. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
