Abstract
The Scientific Exhibit depicting the mobilization of stapes for otosclerotic deafness was awarded the Hektoen Gold Medal for Original Investigation at the 1956 summer meeting of the American Medical Association. The exhibit was designed to present clinical and historical data, as shown in the following pages. Specially treated cadaver specimens were mounted on the main panel (above) to enable physicians to study the main steps of the technique through the otoscope. Instruments designed by me were shown in the order of their use in the procedure. For the patient mobilization is a minor operation, but for the surgeon it demands a high degree of skill and should be performed only by those trained in endaural surgery. Practice on at least 50 fresh cadavers is recommended because of the great number of anatomical variations encountered. It is also essential that careful audiologic workup be made preoperatively to determine the suitability of
