Abstract
Three types of screens were compared in the development of a method for fractionating, by size, ascites tumor cells in a suspension. A specially silver-plated copper grid with a fine matrix was the most effective. The 10 μ OS Millipore filter was useful with the Ehrlich hyperdiploid (ELD) tumor but not with the methylcholanthrene-induced tumor (MCIM) and Sarcoma 37 (S-37). A 10 μ metal screen with coarser matrix could be used only with suction, which deformed the cells and caused loss of viability. With a silver-plated copper screen, pore size 12.8 μ, it was possible to obtain large populations of S-37, MCIM, and ELD cells in which more than 40 percent of the cells above the mean in size had shifted in distribution and the larger sizes had been eliminated. Keywords
