Delayed Ulnar-Nerve Palsy Following a Fracture of the Hamate

Abstract
Severe contusion; pressures on the nerve caused by hemmorhage or edema related to the fracture; and intraneural fibrosis were the 3 kinds of nerve injury described by Howard. The operative findings in this patient suggest that extraneural fibrosis, still another kind of injury, may also occur. It is important to assess ulnar-nerve function at the time of the original injury and to follow closely for possible development of delayed ulnar-nerve palsy. Proper immobilization at the time of injury may prevent formation of excess scar tissue which may cause nerve symptoms.
