The Magnetostrictive Oscillation of Quartz Plates

Abstract
Small quartz plates were vibrated by mechanical impact from magnetostrictive rods cut to the proper lengths. Sand scattered on the plates gathered at the nodal lines and produced figures similar to those on Chladni plates. The quartz plates were then vibrated in an electrical field produced by the same vacuum tube circuit which was used to vibrate the magnetostrictive rods. Electrical and mechanical vibrations gave exactly similar patterns on each crystal provided the frequencies were identical.
