Laser action in Nd:LiTaO 3 proton exchange waveguide exhibiting proton induced excited state lifetime reduction

Abstract
The operation of an Nd doped lithium tantalate waveguide laser is reported. The laser has instabilities and degraded performance attributed, respectively, to optical damage at the pump wavelength, and an important reduction of the excited state lifetime due to a high ratio of proton-lithium exchange in the waveguide.
