Abstract
A detailed study of the temperature and salinity structure on the continental shelf at Richards Bay has shown that there is a well-defined seasonal temperature cycle, and a distinct but less regular seasonal salinity variation. These seasonal patterns are largely restricted to the upper 70 m of the water over the shelf. Seasonal changes likely to be encountered elsewhere along the Natal coast are discussed, and the factors which govern shorter-term variability are briefly examined. Keywords
