Abstract
The propagation of elastic waves in a traversely inhomogeneous medium of infinite extent is studied. A method to separate the governing equations of motion is described and solutions are obtained for the elastic waves generated by an impulsive P type point source. These solutions are compared with the corresponding solution for the homogeneous case and the various effects introduced by the inhomogeneity of the medium are discussed.
