Abstract
To the Editor.— We were very interested in the article by Elpern et al1 in the October 1985 Archives concerning a new photodermatosis called papulovesicular light eruption. A computer analysis of a multicentric study of 193 photodermatoses2 enabled us to determine a new entity, for which the term benign summer light eruption (BSLE), or lucite estivale bénigne, has been suggested. This photodermatosis, which seems to be different from polymorphous light eruption (PMLE), essentially affects young (20- to 35-year-old) women (only 14% of the patients are men). It appears during the second or third day following an intensive sun exposure, such as sunbathing. The rash itches and is predominantly located on sun-exposed areas, such as the chest, the upper part of the back, the shoulders, the outer aspect of the arms, and the dorsum of the hands and feet; in contrast to PMLE, the face is usually spared.
