Hemoglobin Concentration, Thyroid Weight and Growth Rate in Rats During Minimum Fluoride Ingestion

Abstract
When fluoride was administered in the drinking water to rats as sodium fluoride at levels of 1, 5 and 20 ppm, there was normal growth and reproductivity, no depression of hemoglobin formation, no detectable fluoride uptake by thyroid glands, no hypertrophic changes in the thyroid and no decrease in animal resistance to a severe respiratory infectious disease. Dental caries incidence was significantly reduced when 20 ppm of fluoride were ingested in the drinking water.
