Zeolites X, Y and A enriched with trivalent cations: sorption of carbon dioxide and ammonia. Part 1.—Isotherms and affinities

Abstract
The preparation of zeolites X, Y and A enriched with Fe3+, Y3+, Cr3+, Co3+ and Tl+ and their sorptive properties towards carbon dioxide and ammonia are discussed. Adsorption is reversible and reproducible for all the systems and in zeolites X and Y the uptake of CO2 decreases with the degree of exchange; this is attributed to depopulation of supercage cation sites during the exchange process. Agreement between the experimental sorption data and theoretical isotherms is excellent for CO2 in zeolites X and Y; agreement is less favourable for zeolite A. From an analysis of the isosteric heats and sorption affinities it is concluded that the electrostatic fields generated by the M3+ cations were shielded from interaction with CO2 but there was evidence that the trivalent cations had limited interaction with the NH3 molecules.
