Abstract
The life history of Phyllariopsis brevipes (C. Agardh) Henry and South has been completed in culture. Sporophytes release zoospores with eyespots, which germinate to form dioecious gametophytes consisting of clumps of a few isodiametric cells. Gametophytes are not distinguishable as to sex until gametangia are formed. These sexually monomorphic gametophytes are unique in the Laminariales and are considered to indicate primitiveness. Typical laminarialean gametes are formed, and fertilized eggs develop in culture to form sporophytes that become fertile only under short-day photoperiods. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
