Abstract

• This address is dedicated to Lyman A. Brewer III, MD—elegant, eloquent Pacific Coast Surgical Association recorder, president, and historian. Dr Brewer spent most of his 38 membership-years in the Pacific Coast Surgical Association on the Council with 9 years as recorder, 3 years as president-elect, president, and past president, and 10 years as historian. He was a brilliant, energetic leader and his two-volume History of the Pacific Coast Surgical Association stands as a monument to his deep interest and editorial skills. His enthusiasm for discovering and recording historical surgical facts was contagious, and it certainly was a strong factor in my selection of the topic for this address.
