Disaccharidases of the Gastric Mucosa in Chronic Atrophic Gastritis with Intestinal Metaplasia

Abstract
Adjacent gastric mucosa specimens were obtained under gastroscopic control and examined histologically and biochemically for their disaccharidase contents. In chronic atrophic gastritis with intestinal metaplasia or heterotopy, maltase, lactase, sucrase, and trehalase were found. The findings support the assumption that the stomach in mucosal atrophy and intestinalization of mucosa cells exchanges its secretory function for absorptive capacities.
