The pattern of intellectual functioning in Parkinson patients.

Abstract
Development of surgical methods for the treatment of Parkinsonism has stimulated interest in the study of intellectual functioning of these patients. The present study compares a factor analysis of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) with results of factor analyses of the WAIS on normal and brain damage subjects. The subjects in the present study were 33 Parkinson patients, representing a cross section of patients with this diagnosis. The present results are compared with results of other studies. A principal components factor analysis was done and four factors extracted and subjected to varimax rotation. Results indicate the pattern of loadings for Parkinson patients is similar to both the aged and the brain damage samples, with the greater similarity being with the brain damage patients. In view of the large differences in the ages of the groups compared, the similarity of the factor structure is quite striking. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
