Abstract
Utilizing time-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (TREELS) the decompositions of methoxy and methoxy-d3 on Ni(110) have been studied for coverages near 0.16 monolayer. The kinetic parameters for the decomposition of CH3O are: εa(kcal mol−1) =17.0±1.6, log ν(s−1)=12.3±1.4 and for the decomposition of CD3O are: εa(kcal mol−1) =18.8±1.2, log ν(s−1)=13.1±1.0. The value of the isotopic rate ratio kH/kD at 270 K is 5.1±0.8. This is interpreted within a simple activated complex theory as indicative of C–H bending character in the reaction coordinate. Keywords
