Abstract
With the projected increase in student numbers, the transition from school to university will cause more problems than at present unless these are acknowledged and solutions properly managed. At the University of Ulster at Coleraine incoming students to the Faculty of Science were surveyed to assess their attitudes to learning and their expectations of life at University. These results were then compared to a repeat survey after students had been studying for one semester. The results confirm that many of the study habits developed in school persist into the first year of university. This is in spite of staff expectations that students will work more independently and the reality of decreased access to staff support. Keywords
