Amphotericin B Nasal Spray as Prophylaxis against Aspergillosis in Patients with Neutropenia

To the Editor: Pulmonary aspergillosis is a common fungal infection in neutropenic patients with cancer.1 2 3 This opportunistic disease appears to be transmitted by air. At the Institut Jules Bordet, the cancer center of the Université Libre de Bruxelles, we observed an increased incidence of pulmonary aspergillosis in 1983. Eight patients died with autopsy-proved aspergillosis between January 1, 1983, and August 31, 1983. Until now, no effective prophylactic means have been reported except for the isolation of susceptible patients with neutropenia in laminar-air-flow rooms.
