Abstract
Gabrielsson, A. Similarity ratings and dimension analyses of auditory rhythm patterns. I. Scand. J. Psychol., 1973, 14, 138–160.MdashTen experiments on experience of monophonic rhythm patterns are described. The rhythm stimuli, performed on drum or piano, were presented in pairs for similarity ratings and verbal descriptions. The similarity ratings were analyzed according to a recent model for individual differences in multidimensional scaling (INDSCAL). The obtained dimensions were interpreted as “meter”, “rapidity”, “tempo”, “uniformityvariation” or “simplicity‐complexity”, “forward movement”, “length”, “accent on first beat” and dimensions related to the duration pattern of the sound events. There was a marked inter‐individual variation with regard to the subjects' weights for the different dimensions. Keywords
